The team at Hampstead Dental is dedicated to providing high-quality services. With our cutting-edge technology, you can rest assured you’ll receive the best possible modern care with us. We utilise the latest techniques and state-of-the-art equipment. If you have concerns about the health of your jaw, the dentist is the perfect person to evaluate them. We’re happy to offer examinations of your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and their related problems, which are referred to as temporomandibular disorder (TMD).

The Strong Temporomandibular Joint

You can find your temporomandibular joint just in front of your ear on either side of your head. It connects your lower jaw to your skull and functions like a ball-and-socket joint. There is a small piece of cartilage called the articular disc that acts like a cushion in the middle of the ball and socket.

With a healthy jaw, the disc stays put and absorbs pressure as it should. If your TMJ functions as it should, you won’t have pain in your neck, head or jaw when opening or closing your mouth. You’ll have a full range of motion and won’t experience jaw popping or discomfort.

The Symptoms of Jaw-Related Problems

If you have problems with your TMJ, there are certain signs that indicate you may need treatment:

  • Back and shoulder pain
  • Dizziness
  • Ear pain/stuffiness in the ears
  • Headaches
  • Inability to fully open your mouth
  • Jaw pain
  • Neck pain
  • Pain in the jaw while chewing
  • Popping and clicking in the jaw
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Tingling in your upper extremities

Are You at Risk for TMD?

If you have an overbite, underbite, uneven molar bite surface, narrow upper jaw or front teeth that are angled backward, you may be at risk for TMD. You may think there is no danger to leaving it untreated. If you don’t get the attention you need, your TMD will become more painful and debilitating. You may even get osteoarthritis. Chronic cases of TMD can make it difficult to open your mouth, which will severely affect your quality of life.
